I have spent many years combing the web for the best available software. Where possible, I always go for freeware. I am also now looking for an additional feature - like many, I purchased a USB pern drive and, since it is 1gB and has plenry of space, and since I work equally on my home and office PCs, and occassionally borrow a PC when visitng. So, now I am looking out for software which does naot make any registry entries but rather, contents itself (as does all software which I write) with an INI fule in its own directory and, by default, installs any necessary DLLs (which are, where possible, when coding, to be avoided) there also. Or, to put it another way, just as programs in days of yore were wont to run from floppies, so I seek those which can run from a USB flash drive and mind itself not on which machine it be run.
A collection of sites where you may search for any manner of software which I do not here recommend. Preference is given to freeware sites and to those which rate and review software.

Known as Windows Commander, before 'big bill' bade his heavies send a legal threatening letter. Those of us who are old enough remember fondly Norton Commander will find this comfortbly familiar and much more powerful. This program began as a Windoze based clone thereof and quickly superceded it. Short - get it, try it, compare it with windoze exploer and you'll never look back.
Unlike Windows Explorer, the program shows two directory windows side by side for easy copying and moving of files, it allows easy creation of directories and deletion of files oand directories, comparisson of directoies, treats archives (zip, arc, lha, tg.zip, tgz, rar, cab, iso, etc) as directories and allows you to copy files into and out of them, to view and edir files in situ, to access FTP sites as were they directories and much, mucn more.
The first program for which I paid the shareware fee and for which I am happy to evangelicize.

Browser - I have tried many, many browsers and this one is, without a doubt,
the best. It's freeware, it's tabbed, it has too many excellent features to
list. Just try it - you won't look back.
Cookie Wall allows you to quickly and easily decide which cookies can stay on your system, and which cookies should go - once you let CookieWall know which ones are unwelcome, it does the rest. CookieWall can be configured to delete cookies as soon as they arrive, to notify you of any new ones, or just que them up for you to check out at a later date.
CookieWall is currently only compatible with Microsoft Internet Explorer or derived versions (such as NeoPlanet); Netscape support should be available in the near future.

Zip
genuis is probably the best free archive management program. In addition
to ZIP files it handles about 20 other different types of archives, including
ISO, CAB and more. It integrates with OpenOffice.org/StarOffice 6.x, has 5 compression
levels, Automatic ReadMe.txt files reading (URLs can be detected and used),
Can create self-extracting files (SFX) with advanced features, that can even
launch a setup procedure, can repair damaged zip files, can import fiels directly
from a TWAIN device (camera or scanner) and all of the usual funcftionality
which you would expect from a packer.
